To work with wood, a hand saw or hacksaw is often used. This is a practical and inexpensive device. The article describes how to sharpen a hacksaw, provides information about the device and the purpose of the saw.
Purpose and device
Two-handed and one-handed saws are used for sawing. The first are quite rare. More often used electrical appliances. One-handed are often used.
Cloth - a knife with a large number of teeth. On the one hand it ends with a handle, which is held during operations.
Hacksaw can be used when working with laminate, chipboard, for sawing logs, tree trunks, carpentry operations and so on.
For quick work, use long blades with large teeth. For neat - with small ones. For cutting along - with inclined teeth, for transverse - with straight.
A machine is used to sharpen hacksaws.
Why sharpen
Any cutting tool works fine if it is sharp. With prolonged use, the teeth are rounded, the hacksaw course loses smoothness, becomes difficult, also:
- Productivity is getting worse. To make the same number of cuts a blunt device, it takes twice as much time and effort.
- The accuracy of the operations tends to zero. To make a neat cut is almost impossible.
- Using the tool becomes dangerous. The knife is constantly moving out of the cut line, it is jammed, the blade is stuck, the teeth become even more unusable. You can be injured.
The only way to return to factory settings, to get an even and smooth ride, is to sharpen the hacksaw.
How to determine if the time has come
A hand saw on a tree needs to be sharpened, if it has become difficult to handle, the instrument began to make other sounds when working.
You can also determine the sharpness of the gloss of the cutting edges of the teeth.
If you sharpen the hacksaw correctly, the tool will quickly restore its properties..
Not all teeth can be sharpened with a file or other mechanical device. This cannot be done with red-hot hacksaws (their teeth are black with a bluish tint).
Saw teeth
To sharpen the hacksaw, the teeth must first be bred. It is necessary for a smooth ride without clamps or jams.. The process consists in alternating, uniform bending of the teeth. As a result, free gaps form on both sides of the blade, the saw begins to move in the cut faster and easier.
- The wider the tooth bite, the less likely the saw will get stuck during operation. But, if you overdo it, the width of the cut will become too large. This will complicate the use of the tool.
- Standard wiring - no more than 2 mm. It is recommended to bend the teeth 0.3-0.5 mm for dry materials, 0.5-1 mm for raw wood.
- Special devices are used - wiring (see photo). The saw is tightly clamped with a vice so that the teeth do not protrude completely. The device is mounted on a work surface. Begin the bending process.
Tools and workflow
Rules:
- Equipment for sharpening saws. Use a new sharp file and file with a fine notch for stripping.
- Fixing tool. The canvas is fixed with a vise. How to install and handle the blade is presented in the video.
- Technique of work. The upper layer of metal is removed with a file (the thickness of the layer is determined by the force of pressure). They make sure that the movements are uniform, progressive, in one direction. If the layer cannot be removed, it means that the file is worn out or the teeth have red-hot teeth. In the first case, the tool is replaced with a new one. It is impossible to grind hot saws.
When working with a file, it is important to observe the same pressure power when sharpening each of the teeth. It is necessary to exert the same pressure on the tool, monitor the thickness of the made layer. If burrs form, they are removed with a file with a velvet surface.
After sharpening, the sharpness of the teeth is checked. The work is done efficiently if they do not shine in the light.
