The most dangerous disease is garlic rust. Spicy garlic plant is a favorite on our table and garden. You can’t do without it when preserving vegetables, preparing various dishes. Due to its phytoncide properties, it protects other garden crops growing nearby. Unfortunately, he is also susceptible to disease. How to process the shoots of garlic, how to prevent the development of rust, we consider below.
Rust on the leaves of garlic - a manifestation of the disease
Planting this or that culture at our summer cottage, we always dream of a good harvest. We try to surround the plants with attention and care, we strive to prevent possible diseases in advance. When damaged by rust, the leaves are the first to suffer. Slightly convex, pale yellowish spots form on the surface of the stems. They look more like rusty spots on garlic leaves. After some time, the spots (pustules) darken, acquire a brown hue, their surface shell is destroyed. Inside windy spores can spread throughout the site, spanning neighboring territories. Thus, the rust of garlic affects other plants.
This disease can cause significant damage to the crop: garlic loses foliage (it dries out), rhizome (bulb) does not receive enough nutrients, does not develop, it is no longer necessary to talk about taste. The causes of rust on garlic lie in the spores of fungi, which are incredibly tenacious and frost-resistant. If, for example, some residues from the previous crop remain, and with the advent of spring the beds have not been properly processed, new plantings can become infected with rust spores. Heat and moisture only contribute to the activation of the disease, and spores, as mentioned above, are easily transported by air. The disease affects not only onions and garlic, but also most other garden crops.
Garlic Rust - Control
Based on the fact that this scourge is very common in our open spaces, prevention should be taken care of in advance. The first stage is the processing of cloves for sowing. It will be good if you pre-spread the seed under the rays of the scorching sun. This kind of processing will be quite lengthy (about 10 hours), while the air temperature should be 35-38 ° C. Garlic cloves can also be treated with furatsilinom. To prepare the drug for spraying, you need to grind, dissolve 10 tablets in 1 liter of water.
A ten-minute immersion of the teeth in a 40% formalin solution diluted with water (1: 250) gives a good preventive effect. For this method, garlic is peeled, put in a tissue bag. After 10 minutes in the solution, the bag with the teeth is placed for a couple of hours inside the plastic bag so that there is no air access. And then aerate well in a shaded area.
If you have already grown perennial onions, try to keep the garlic plantings as far away from the onion beds. A preventive measure is also high-quality cleaning of plants, deep digging of the soil where garlic will be planted in spring. If you notice that the rust on the garlic has already appeared, all affected leaves should be removed or destroyed as soon as possible (for example, burn). A quick reaction at the very beginning of the manifestation of the disease can stop its further development.
If the situation is serious, then treatment with chemicals such as HOM, Ridomil Gold MT 68 WG, Oksikhom, copper sulfate, Bordeaux liquid, ground tar soap (dissolved in water) will be required. Irrigation should be carried out weekly. To make Bordeaux liquid (1%) better in contact with the stalks of garlic, add a paste (brewed starch with water) to the composition.
Garlic rust - treatment, preventative methods:
- Do not plant garlic in the same place every year. The time period should be at least 3 years.
- Make sure that in the area where the garlic will grow, crops that are prone to rust disease do not grow earlier.
- The land on the garlic site should be carefully dug up and checked for plant debris. Discovered fragments of other plants must be destroyed.
- As already mentioned, garlic and onions should grow at a considerable distance from each other, especially if they are of different ages.
- Inspect the beds every 7-10 days, remove suspicious leaves in a timely manner.
- Make timely soil loosening and weed removal.
- Do not be lazy to heat the teeth before sowing.
- Do not sow garlic beds too thickly, there should be an acceptable distance between plants.
A kind of soil protection before sowing the teeth does not hurt, the drug Fitosporin-M is perfect for this business. Whatever chemical treatment you carry out, remember - irrigation should be stopped a month before the day of harvesting. Many components of chemicals (for example, the same copper) can cause significant damage to human health.
Garlic disease rust, what to treat additionally? How to treat garlic from rust? Pay attention to these two fungicides - Alirin-B and Gamair. These drugs showed good results in the fight against another, no less dangerous disease - peronosporosis. As practice has shown, the protective effect of these compounds is detrimental to the fungus of rust. The bacterial immunomodulator Alirin-B has a wide range of lesions of multiple fungal manifestations, it is used to treat and protect various garden crops. The bacterial fungicide Gamair has a similar effect to Alirin-B, the spectrum of its "activity" is also similar.
It is worth mentioning the popular methods of dealing with this scourge. If your garden was visited by a disease of garlic rust, folk remedies such as saline, ammonia, tar soap may well help. The use of these components can muffle the manifestation of the disease at the initial stage. They give a good complex effect along with other drugs with a fungicidal effect. Thus, the salt is dissolved in water - 1 cup per bucket of water. The resulting solution is treated with the first spots on the leaves. The sooner you notice them, the better. Such treatment should be carried out as often as possible, regularly.
With liquid ammonia (3 tablespoons / 1 bucket of water) you can spray the leaves and ground around garlic seedlings. Grated tar soap, dissolved in water, thoroughly treats the affected areas, as well as the soil near the plants.
Based on the above information, if rust suddenly appears on garlic, than processed - you will already know, but it is better that it bypasses your garden.
